"Behold, [the] days are coming," says the LORD, "That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; a King shall reign and prosper, and execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely; now this [is] His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Why does God call the Messiah a “Branch?” All people are sinful by nature, destined for hell. God desires to bless His people, receiving praise for the perfect blessings He gives. We can’t properly worship God unless our sin is dealt with, which means God must work a miracle, so that His righteousness is able to flow through us, who don’t have righteousness of our own. The Bible describes the goodness of God that flows through people, whose sins are forgiven, as “fruit of the Spirit.” How does fruit grow? From a branch! Jesus is our Branch - the means by which we connect to the perfect righteousness of God, to be cleansed, and equipped for praise, which is our fruit from the Spirit.
