Fulfilling All Righteousness
But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit [it to be so] now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice [came] from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
The Old Testament scriptures proclaim that “God” is the LORD Our Righteousness. The New Testament scriptures proclaim that Jesus is God in flesh. How do we know it’s true? Jesus said that His baptism would signify the beginning of His work, to “fulfill all righteousness.” When He came up from the water, the Holy Spirit rested on Jesus according to the prophecy of Isaiah 11:1-2. The voice of the Father was heard by all, proving that Jesus uniquely had His approval, showing that He is perfect, and so, qualified to offer Himself as a sacrifice for the sin of the world. To get the benefits of Jesus’ work, we must trust these claims to be true.
