Fighting The Good Fight
This man went up from his city yearly to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. Also the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, [were] there.
1 Samuel 1:3
God is first called Jehovah Sabaoth in 1 Samuel 1:3, in the absence of a physical conflict. Why did God refer to Himself this way if there was no war? The war was spiritual! The testimony of 1 Samuel shows that the priests of Israel were corrupt, perverting the worship of God. So, God referred to Himself as “the LORD of armies,” to show that His control and victory is rooted in the spirit realm. God desires to reveal Himself as the LORD of hosts to exercise His supreme control, to fight on behalf of those ill-equipped to recognize the conflict; thereby provoking fear in our hearts, which equips us for proper worship according to His providence.
