The Bronze Serpent
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery [serpent], and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.
When Israel grumbled against God, He quieted them by sending an infestation of poisonous snakes. Moses sought God for the people. God told him to make a bronze serpent on a wooden staff, so that when the people looked to it by faith, they would be healed. This was a prophetic picture of Jesus Christ. God displayed the symbol of our judgment, the poisonous serpent. He put it up on a “staff.” Looking at the picture of this poisonous source by faith, brought healing to the body. Jesus’ fulfillment was a picture of our poisonous flesh; and looking unto Him on the cross by faith, provides healing to the soul. God proved His wisdom to diagnose and heal. God saw that the sickness of His people was related to selfishness. He healed them by directing their attention to an image of the Messiah, through His judgment.
