Leading Into Repentance

Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?

Romans 2:4

The scriptures use the image of a sheep and a shepherd to show how God leads His people into the kingdom of heaven. However, God has to lead us to repentance first! The LORD steers us into the direction of change – away from sin, and into His holiness. God leads to this change, by the riches of His goodness, speaking of the immeasurable wealth of His grace. God shepherds us in forbearance, referring to mercy: The time He takes to restrain His wrath against us, conforming us into His image. God steers us into repentance, suffering a long time while He directs us from “self,” into the likeness of His Son. This is how we enter into His kingdom.
