The Great Cleansing
“This shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel, for all their sins, once a year.” And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.
Leviticus 16:34
God is eternally unchanging so His Word must be eternally unchanging too. God’s commands for animal sacrifice were never the way people were saved from sin. They were intended to teach about God’s greatness. Without the shedding of blood, sins can’t be forgiven. The number of animals slaughtered showed the magnitude of sin to be dealt with. Who but God is able to offer a sacrifice to make atonement for all sin? Only God is able, which He did when He came as Jesus Christ! Though a man, Jesus was also God, making His blood eternally valuable to pay the debt of ALL sin, where animals could not, no matter how many were killed.
