While the world looks a lot different today than it did, say, 10 years ago, not much has changed. The reality of life is that different people are dealing with the same issues today as was the case since the beginning. This truth is presented in obvious fashion through the Bible. In Genesis 3:1-7 the Bible documents the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden. The Bible explains that it is at this moment in time where life dramatically changed on this planet so that all of the challenges and tragedies that are dealt with now are on account of sin that started back then. While some people have the tendency of questioning and sometimes trying to blame God for all of the world's problems, scripture makes it quite clear who's really at fault.
In Genesis 3:1-7 the Bible says that a serpent approached Eve and began to inquire of her. People have wasted a lot of time trying to understand why the serpent is talking in this narrative. It doesn't matter. When one understands that this is the same serpent spoken of in Revelation 12:9, it becomes clear how the serpent is able to communicate to the Eve. Revelation 12:9 states that this serpent is the embodiment of the devil, who is actually described as a dragon seeking to destroy the work of God through Jesus as the Messiah. This motive is clearly and immediately stated. Genesis 3:1-7 states that the serpent said to Eve, "Did God really say, 'You shall not eat from any tree in the Garden?'" This simple question proves that all things remains the same no matter how much time elapses or how sophisticated people think they have become. The devil sought to attack the Word of God through the first two people on earth, and he continues to do so today. The devil sought to inspire Eve to question God's Word. One can simply remove the last half of the devil's statement, place in another phrase and see that the attack remains the same. The beginning phrase, "Did God really say..." has been the single most effective weapon that the devil has used to destroy millions of lives. It is by this question that people have become confused about the world's origins, about what is right and what is wrong, about justice, about marriage, about gender, even about the boarders in Israel.
From the beginning, the devil has sought to inspire mankind to question the authority and validity of God's Word. Today there are millions who claim to be Christians that have a hard time accepting the contents of the Bible as they are written because in the back of their mind, there is still a voice saying, "Did God really say?" Genesis 3:1-7 is clear to explain why mankind suffered the consequences that we see today. As Eve was presented with the mother of all temptations, she responded to the devil and in her response revealed why this temptation was effective. The Bible explains that Eve said, "We may eat the fruit from the trees in the Garden. But the fruit of the tree in the middle of the Garden, God said, 'You shall not eat or touch it, or you will die.'" In this statement, Eve proved that she was ill equipped to deal with the devil's temptation. The devil got Eve to question the Word of God and Eve demonstrated ignorance of God's Word so that the devil's temptation was successful. She was correct to say that God commanded them not to eat the fruit from the tree. She was incorrect to say that God commanded them not to "touch" the fruit from the tree. God never said that. While it may seem as if that is naturally implied, those words never came from God.
Eve was adding to God's Word showing that she not only didn't know God's Word, but didn't understand the purpose of God's Word. The fruit in it of itself was not evil nor good. The fruit was a tool that God used to measure the desire of mankind to worship Him. Would they desire God more than a fruit that was enticing? Since Eve was ignorant of this reality, she is seen adding to the Word of God demonstrating her ignorance of God's Word and of God Himself. She is a perfect target for the devil and such is why she was targeted. Without a knowledge and understanding of the Living God through His Word, and without the respect and trust in the Word as the supreme authority over all things, the devil will succeed and lead people into destruction.
As Eve responded to the devil, the devil responded back, candidly lying to the woman that she would not die. The devil sought to make the consequence of God seem like fairy tale. The devil sought to make the judgment of God like a joke. the devil sought to make the idea of God's wrath see, like a hoax. The devil proposed the idea that God was trying to horde wisdom. The devil tried to paint God as a bad guy that is restricting all of the goodness of life to Himself and is trying to deprive His creation so that He can remain on top. The devil lied to the woman and said that if she ate the fruit, she would be like God. Not much has changed.
The devil tells the same lies today. As the devil planted these ideas in the mind of Eve, Genesis 3:1-7 explains that she began to let her guard down. For a woman that thought she wasn't allowed to touch a certain fruit, the Bible explains that she soon began to peer at it and examine it. She found that it was good for food, delightful to look at, and desirable for obtaining wisdom. She suddenly desired to be like God as the fruit appealed to her fleshly desires. The outward appearance looked good, but her lack of understanding of God caused her to be blinded about the truth of the substance of that fruit. Not much has changed.
Today the devil is planting the same ideas. He is inspiring people to question the authority of God's Word so that the wisdom and "discoveries" of men hold superior position over the authority of the Bible. The devil is lying to many people in that God will not judge sin. The devil has been successful in convincing many people that God's judgment and wrath are not real. Such is why the flood of Noah is such a widely debated topic even though there is tons of evidence all over the world that God judged by a global flood. If people confess that the flood is real, then God's judgment is real. If God's judgment is real, then mankind is in genuine need to submit to Him instead of trying to become greater than Him.
The Bible says that the devil enticed Eve to ponder the idea that she could become like God. Today there are many people who believe that they can create like God, that they can define what is right and wrong like God, and that they can receive praise and worship like God. Sure enough, there have been millions upon millions of people who have examined sin in various forms, considered the propositions of the devil, were appealed to in their flesh, delighted in the vision of being like God, and desired to do exactly what God says not to do. Genesis 3:1-7 documents the most tragic event of human history. The Bible explains that Eve took the fruit, ate it, and then shared her sin with her husband Eve. Adam took the fruit and he also ate of it.
The Bible explains that suddenly both of their eyes were opened, they were aware of the manner in which they were created being naked, and suddenly were in shame. The Bible accounts sin to Adam since God directly communicated to Adam to abstain from the fruit. The Bible explains that Eve was deceived, but Adam sinned. Thus, the Bible clearly reveals that deception leads to sin. Many people question and criticize Adam wondering where he was when all this was happening. It doesn't matter. What matters is that deception was made possible because of a lack of understanding of God's Word and the God who wrote it. The Bible teaches that God's people are destroyed due to a lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6). Genesis 3:1-7 and the last 7,000 years or so of history prove that case to be absolutely true. Since people do not know God through His Word, people have become easy targets for the devil's wiles and one can just look at the tragedy that exists in the world today as proof.
Unfortunately, the foolishness of mankind is further demonstrated in Genesis 3:1-7. The Bible shows that instead of seeking God to confess the mistake and seek forgiveness, mankind made the tragic mistake of trying to be like God. Though Adam and Eve were ashamed of themselves and their nakedness, they did not seek a solution from God. Instead, they tried to provide their own solution to cover the affects of their sin. The Bible says they sewed fig leaves to cover themselves. The best efforts of Adam and Eve to cover the shame of their sin was a fig leaf. Not much has changed. Though today's "fig leaves" may seem more sophisticated in appearance, they are equally as pitiful and ineffective. Today's fig leaves look like alcoholic beverages and other mind altering substances, academic intellect and credentials, titles, prestige, outward appearance through clothing, cars, houses, accessories, and social media. None of these things hide the fact that without God's provision for forgiveness, we all stand as naked and exposed before a holy and just God in our shame.
It is ironic to see that as mankind pats itself on the back for all that we "know," we still fall victim to the same simple attack from the devil because we don't learn. God's Word is truth, whether you believe it or not. According to the Bible, if you don't believe in the truth of God's Word, its the words of someone else that are directing the path of life. Thankfully, God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. God knows that His creation has failed. God knows that we are at fault. Yet God is merciful and gracious to offer something better than a fig leaf to fix the problem. God is not interested in covering over shame. God is mighty to save and is able to remove shame. God's provision for this is just as simple now as it was in the Garden - trust in His Word. His Word says that God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son so that whoever believes in His identity and trusts in His work will not perish, but have the quality of life that God desired to give before mankind ruined it with sin. Thus, everyday we all have a choice to make: who's words will we listen to and live by, God's, or Satan's? Only one of these voices leads to life.
